Building an Environmental & Sustainability Framework for Kakamega County
Trendz & Future Ventures partnered with Kakamega County Government to assess environmental management practices and build a practical sustainability framework addressing forest conservation, waste management, and climate resilience.

Trendz & Future Ventures partnered with Kakamega County Government to strengthen environmental management and build a more sustainable, resilient approach to development across the county, addressing pressing needs around forest conservation, waste management, and climate resilience.

About Kakamega County and the Sustainability Challenge

Kakamega County is home to the Kakamega Forest, Kenya’s only remaining tropical rainforest, and faces mounting environmental pressures from deforestation, population growth, and unplanned urban expansion.

County leadership recognized the need for a structured environmental and sustainability strategy that could balance ongoing development with the protection of the county’s natural resources. Without a clear framework, environmental risks and compliance gaps were being addressed reactively rather than as part of a coordinated plan.

Trendz & Future Ventures was engaged to assess the county’s environmental management practices and design a sustainability framework aligned with both national environmental regulations and the county’s development priorities.

Report

Kakamega County Environmental & Sustainability Framework

Our Approach to Environmental & Sustainability Consulting

Our team conducted a comprehensive environmental audit across key county departments and public facilities, assessing compliance with environmental regulations, waste management practices, and resource use.

We engaged with county officials, environmental authorities, and community stakeholders to understand the specific pressures facing Kakamega’s natural resources, from forest encroachment to solid waste management in urban centers.

The result was a practical Environmental & Sustainability Framework that gave the county a clear set of priorities, compliance requirements, and recommended actions to strengthen environmental stewardship across its operations.

Key Focus Areas of the Framework

The framework set out clear priority areas to guide environmental management and investment over the coming years:

Forest & Biodiversity Conservation – Strengthening protections around Kakamega Forest and surrounding ecosystems.
Waste Management – Improving solid waste collection, disposal, and recycling systems across urban centers.
Environmental Compliance – Aligning county operations with NEMA and national environmental regulations.
Climate Resilience – Building the county’s capacity to adapt to and mitigate the effects of climate change.
